Road to lifting the cup
Its been a few years now since having a host for the IISHF Veterans Cup, and this year SHC Rossemaison stepped up to the plate to host once more. With 10 teams from 5 different countries we knew we were going to be in for some great hockey, we just didnt know how great it would be.
The two teams reaching the final, Duisburg Ducks and HC Laupersdorf.
Duisburg Ducks only allowing 6 goals in 4 games topped their group and had rested legs going into the semi final on Sunday. With a commanding 4 - 1 lead in the game against Essen they thought that the game was all sown up and a done deal. However, Essen felt differently and did not give up. Bringing the game to a 4 - 4 tie with 3 minutes to go it looked like we were set to go to overtime. With a renewed sense of urgency Ducks quickly came back with a goal taking it to 5 - 4. Essen not yet done determined to take the game to OT in the last second fired a shot on goal, only to be beat by the buzzer by a fraction of a second sending Ducks into the Final.
The second semi final saw HC Laupersdorf and SHC Rossemaison in a hard fought back and forth game with neither team wanting to give in and both teams determined to win. This game ended 2 - 2 in regulation time meaning 3 on 3 overtime.
With overtime continuing like the rest of the game it was with 2:09 on the clock where Laupersdorf intercepted a pass on a 2 on 1 play to create their own chance with a long pass and a 2 on 1 chance of their own and completing the opportunity propelling themselves into the final to play the Ducks.
The final saw a much different game to the two semi finals where it was clear that both teams had exhausted the tanks in reaching the final. Ducks with a shorter bench were out paced by Laupersdorf going down by several goals early in the game. The game finally concluded with a much stronger, Laupersdorf winning 5 - 1
